The Georgia Department of Agriculture announced a recall of Oscar Mayer's Ready to Eat Chicken Breast Strips With Rib Meat after finding traces of Listeria monocytogenes in the strips. The contaminated chicken strip packages of concern contain the establishment number "19676".

According to wsbtv.com:

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially serious disease. The most common manifestation of listeriosis is meningitis, which has symptoms of high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths, as well as serious and sometimes fatal infections to infants, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems such as persons with chronic diseases or taking chemotherapy for cancer.

The recall of these chicken strips from the Commissioner of Agriculture Tommy Irvin's office comes at a precarious time given the recent peanut butter recall issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and Centers For Disease Control last week. It marks a step in the right direction toward limiting serious injury and/or potential death from a known threat. In situations like this it is always better to be safe than sorry. If you have purchased any of the contaminated chicken strips please throw them away immediately if you or somone you know did not get sick from their consumption.
