Mesothelioma—the DEADLY Disease

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer usually associated with frequent exposure to asbestos. This disease takes about 20 to 60 years for a person to notice they even have it.

There are around 14 in a million people who are diagnosed with mesothelioma a year. The most common association is with occupational and environmental exposure to asbestos.

StarTribune wrote a recent article discussing a mesothelioma study from the University of Minnesota. The researchers from the University will be giving an update on a five year study into mesothelioma on the Iron range. It will be Thursday evening at the Mountain Iron community center to talk about the 4.9 million dollar study.

Parts of the study include health screenings of northeastern Minnesota miners along with their families which will begin this spring. The goal for this study is to randomly screen about 2,000 people at the Virginia Regional Medical Center. The researchers want to determine if there is a relationship between exposure to taconite dust and mesothelioma (which has been associated with exposure to asbestos).
